By the time Xavier was 11, he’d already been arrested on serious charges. A life of crime was all he knew thanks to his biological father.
“To be honest I thought I would die by 12. At 11 I was arrested. I’m talking about selling drugs, gang-banging, just to make a living, to put food on the table,” Xavier said. “That’s what I was taught, that’s what my biological father did to me.”
Like Taylor who was told he was “unadoptable,” Xavier thought he was doomed until he met Joe Toles. When Xavier was 18, Joe, an orphan himself, did the unthinkable and adopted him.
Now, Xavier is 20 and the Toles’ home is a full house. Joe adopted two other teens with difficult pasts, 17-year-old John and 14-year-old Ronnie.
“I decided that I wanted to adopt. I’m single. I don’t have any support so I don’t know how I would have been able to do it with a younger kid. I wasn’t really looking for a 17-year-old… then there was Xavier,” Joe said.
“Moving here, it was very very scary. I didn’t know what to expect. Was it going to be another person I would have to fight against,” Xavier said. “I always had male figures who beat me, who told me that I was never going to make it, that I wasn’t worth anything,” Xavier. Learning that Joe was on his side was a tough pill to swallow.
“I started understanding that this is a guy that’s going to be in my life forever. I never had that before… I look at him as my dad. He’s the only dad I ever had,” he says.
